Hi. How can I apply my Proxy settings to Windows Defender to allow updates?
Windows Update works fine but I can't find anywhere to enter the Proxy
settings in WD.

Thanks

If proxy settings work correctly for Internet Explorer, Windows Defender
should use them. However, some seem to find this does not work.

However, there may be a bigger problem. Windows Defender updates via
AutoUpdate within the application, or Windows Update (or Microsoft Update)
manually.

If AutoUpdate is routed to a centralized server on your network--SUS or
WSUS, Windows Defender will look there (and only there.) for signature
updates. The updates are offered via a new class which must be approved by
the administrator, on WSUS. They are not available via SUS.

If you can reach WindowsUpdate from your machine, you should be able to
update Windows Defender Signatures that way.

We use CensorNet (http://www.censornet.com) as our web content filter proxy.
No sus or wsus. I have no problem performing Windows updates. When I launch
Windows update it triggers my proxy, I log on and that's it. Window Defender
does not trigger my proxy therefore it fails with error 0x8024401b

Thanks
Steve

Does AutoUpdate work?

You can update Windows Defender via Windows Update--is that working?

As I stated I have no problem performing Windows Updates, it triggers my
proxy and I then authenticate. Windows Defender does not trigger my proxy
therefor I can't authenticate and thus the the error.

Does AutoUpdate work?

Windows Defender definitions are available via Windows Update--so that is a
working route for you, if I understand you correctly. Updates within the
program go via AutoUpdate. It sounds to me as though AutoUpdate doesn't
work in your environment. If this is the case, you will need to use Windows
Update to get the definition updates.

I'm confused... are you saying that I can manually download the updates for
Defender? Where? can you provide a link?

Thanks
Steve

Go to Windows Update. Windows Defender definition updates are available
there.
