Hi,

I manage a website for a local auction website. I have to update the
Auction Diary page on a weekly basis.

I'm on holiday for the next couple of weeks and will still need to update
the diary page. Any suggestions on the most efficient method would be
appreciated.

There is only 56k dial up access where I am staying. I was thinking of
copying the whole (rather large) website to disk and copying it the computer
where I'll be staying and then uploading it along with any amendments but
this approach would take ages due to the dial up access.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards,

Will the computer where you're staying have FrontPage installed?
If not, taking the web with you on CD won't work.

What kind of server is the web site hosted on??
If Apache / UNIX, does it have the web masters CPanel.
If so you can edit the site live using the CPanel file manager.

If the live/remote site has the FP extensions, then just open the live/remote site directly in FP
and edit the Auction Diary page as needed.

I do this all the time when I travel by operating my home computer remotely
using my laptop. The advantage for me is that I can even use a remote connection
that is only slow dial-in but my desktop can do what it needs to do over its
fast internet connection. And of course, this keeps the "master" copy on the
desktop.

www.logmein.com has a free utility for that

www.gotomypc.com has a $20 per month fee but you can sign use it for just a
month and then stop your account.

I also bought a timer that powers my desktop off and on each night, just in case
it somehow freezes up on me (it is a pc after all) and needs a hard restart. So
it is good to go the next day.

You can give logmein a try before you go. What is there to lose? It's free.

Contentseed.com works with or without fp ... you can use a free editor on
the computer where your staying or even just notepad ... set things up
beforehand to give yourself access - not totally sure how contentseed.com
works in this respect so I'm just guessing ... if you have clients it's
worth it when they need to their own updating but you don't want them to
'touch' certain things...
