While attempting to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows
XP, I get the message:

The file
C:$WIN_NT$.~LS\i386\asms\1000\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS.CAT IS
corrupt; it contains all zeroes.

What can I do to fix?

Hello

The $WIN_NT$.~LS and $WIN_NT$.~BT directories are the temporary directories
windows
installed to your harddrive prior to installation. These or your CD is
corrupt.
This could have occurred due to bad ram, bad blocks on the harddrive or
read errors
on the CD-ROM. Take out any thing you don't need right away. Just leave
the CD-ROM, 1 stick of RAM, Videocard, etc -- you get the picture, and
reinstall. You can add the cards after the OS is
installed. Also initially set your RAM timings to non-aggressive settings
in the BIOS during the installation.
