Hi everyone,

I hope the docmanagement group is the correct choice for
this question:

I have inherited a long and complex document. It has been
distributed several times and requires periodic updating.
Certain "tweaks" have been made to the Table of Contents
and this is where my problem lies. I want to update
*only* the page numbers. However, when I press F9 I *do
not* get the choice of updating pages numbers only or the
entire table. I've never seen this before, I've tried
everything I can think of (checked all the styles etc.)

Can anyone save my sanity?

Thanks a million in advance.

Sharon.

Hi Sharon

I did respond to your first post of this question just yesterday, but since
you've started a new thread and the original was a while back maybe you
haven't seen it, so here it is again.

I believe that Word sometimes doesn't give the option to 'update page
numbers only' if the structure of the document (relating to the hidden cross
references for the TOC) has changed - so this could be a warning that you
will need to regenerate the TOC, and reapply the manual formatting.

Do you get the same effect if you right click and choose 'Update field'?

You could try using VBA to request page number only update from a macro or
the immediate window using

ActiveDocument.TablesOfContents(1).UpdatePageNumbers

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for that. I posted this latest message this
morning to what I *thought* was a different user group,
only to discover the reality. As you can guess, I am
obsessed in my quest for a solution!

Yep, I tried the right-click update field.

I had pretty much come to the conclusion that it was the
historical "tampering" with the document that may have
been the cause. Too bad. I will most probably spend quite
some time regenerating and formatting only to be faced
with the same problem in the future (if I survive that
long!)

It's a superb solution to use a macro. I'll have a go at
it. Thanks so much for the glimmer of hope. I'll let you
know how I get on.

Sharon.

Hi again Margaret,

Well, I've had a certain measure of success thanks to
you. I created the macro as you suggested and ran it on
the TOC in the document. It still updated the entire TOC
but, lo and behold, it (somehow) reactivated the page
numbers or entire TOC dialog box. I thought it might be
of interest to you to know that. Does that seem strange
to you? No matter what, I'm happy :-)

Hi Sharon

Thanks for the feedback, and glad to hear you had success, even if not
complete enlightenment <g>.

I can only guess that if you did finally end up updating the TOC then Word
was happy it had a consistent set of cross references that it could update
the page numbers for???
