Updating from Outlook XP/2002 to 2003, none of my old categories came over, either on the master list or with my individual contacts. Suggestions? (other than recreating/reassigning) Thank you, Wayland.

The Master Category List is in the registry -- see
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/olcat.htm for location of the registry
entries and see if they still exist.

As for the categories saved with individual contacts -- did you import from
your old .PST file or did you open the .PST in Outlook and copy the data to
the new .PST? Copying would work best...

Thank you for replying. I will check the registry. I did not import nor copy my old file. The installation software did it automatically. It just left out all category info. Thank you Microsoft for another piece of almost right engineering. Sorry, just had to gripe. Thank you again. W

If you're simply using the same .PST file you used in Outlook 2002, the
categories should have stayed with the items...

I completely agree, "...the categories should have stayed with the items...", but they are no where to be found. If I list my contacts by category, none are categorized

Slipstick has no instructions for finding the registry item for finding the master categories list in Outlook 2003. I tried all instructions for earlier versions - nothing. Just thought you'd like to know

Thank you for your attempts to help, Waylan

I'm trying to find out of there's a way you might be able to get your Master
Category List back -- I'll let you know what I find out. As for the
individual categories, you might want to try running the Inbox Repair Tool
against your .PST file to see if it finds any errors. Make a backup of the
file first -- you shouldn't have any problems, but just in case...

OK -- I've been told that if you added custom categories to the Master
Category List in Outlook 2002, and you upgraded your version of Office over
the old version, you should still have the Categories registry key under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook. If so, try
copying that key to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook, then restart
Outlook and/or your PC and see if the MCL now contains your custom
categories. It *should* work.

Jocelyn,

Thank you for trying so hard to help me. I believe that I looked in the "...\Office\10.0\Outlook" registry key and didn't find anything, but I will look again and follow your instructions if I find anything. Thanks again for staying with me on this. Wayland
