I keep getting updates for windows to download on my
computer. Does this also automatically update the
patches that you can get from Microsoft.com or do I need
to do that manually? If I do it manually and it says to
download and I download it to "C" drive, is that all I
have to do?
Thank You, Jeanie
Updates for your antivirus and your operating system are separate tasks.
The exact "how" that updates an antivirus program depends on which program
you have - but most have some form of retrieving and installing updates on
a regular basis. Check the documentation for your program (help file,
perhaps?) for the exact details.
There are several ways to manage updates for Windows XP:
1) "Automatic Updates" utility: This tool can be configured on the
Automatic Updates page of the System control panel applet. Options include:
notification before download and before installing
automatic downloading with notification regarding installation
scheduled downloads and installations
2) Using Internet Explorer to visit the Windows Update site: Use Start> All
Programs> Windows Update to arrive at the interactive update site. The site
will scan the system and suggest updates that apply to your configuration.
Three categories: Critical (very important security and stability patches);
Windows (recommended but optional) and Drivers (optional - might choose to
check hardware manufacturer for current drivers instead).
3) Visit the Windows Update Catalog: Manual system of finding the patches
for your operating system. Downloading them. And of course, installing them
too.
