Updating fields in edit

I have a data base of information that needs to be updated periodically and I
want today's date to be inputted into the date field automatically when the
record is accessed for updating. Then I can use a query to select today's
date in the criteria and print the updated records. I've tried event
procedure, but it doesn't work.
