Updating AVG

I notice the next scheduled update is stated as next day's date between
8am and 9;59am. Does this mean it will only check for updates between
these two times or is this merely when they post their update.

I believe that the free version of AVG downloads updates once per 24 hours,
regardless of when an update is posted or how many updates there are. Avast
otoh downloads updates whenever they are posted on the avast server, several
times a day if necessary.

Yes this is correct. You can't specify the exact time you want the
update to happen - just the 2 hour window and then AVG allocates a
random time in this range to do it's updates every day. If you want to
update near enough to a particular time, you have to keep clicking a
button in the scheduler and stop when it's close enough to your chosen
time

But what happens if the computer isn't running between the designated
times. Does update when you turn it on or skip the update?

Yes. You've never noticed?

Of course you can merely right click the tray icon and choose "check for
updates" anytime.

When I had AVG on my laptop, used about once/week, I would open the control
center and tell it to update when I went on-line. I never used the AVG
automatic update at all.

If you look at the scheduler and then highlight update and then edit
schedule you will see that there is a box that can be ticked that says

If internet connection is not available, check when it goes on line.


so even if it is missed when computer is not on - it will update
shortly after the computer is next switched on.

That is certainly my experience. I use a laptop at home - some evenings
only - and it seems that each time I power on my laptop it checks for an
update as soon as I login. (I've not looked at what the time is for the
scheduled update, just left it at whatever default setting it installed
with.)

Thanks all. That box for update when machine is turned on was checked,
so it's the default. I was just curious as to why they bothered to give
a range of times rather than just a preferred time to check. Couldn't
test myself since my wife has got in the habit of turning my machine on
long before I wake up so she can play freecell and it's easier to post
the question here than fixing that problem.

I used to find with my laptop the wireless wouldn't kick in for a couple
of minutes or so after startup and AVG wouldn't update.
