I am trying to install updated ATI drivers as opposed to
what came with XP. ATI instructs that the current drivers
must be uninstalled and the machine must boot up with
generic VGA drivers before installing the new ones.
Whenever I uninstall the drivers from the device manager
the automaticlly reinstall on reboot. Is there a way to
stop this?

I just installed an ATI upgraded on a asus motherbother I coundn't get anywere until the upgrade from asus put 4.5meg ATI specific upgrade on to the xp program.tell Me if it worked w/ simular setup.

I know what ATI says to do but, because of the problem you mentioned, I just
run the setup program from the ATI Catalyst download and it installs the new
files just fine over the old files. I've done that for every update since I
installed XP Pro - and had no problems.

Uninstall the ATI drivers using Add/Remove Programs. You'll see it listed
with the note "drivers only" next to it. When you restart, the display will
probably be horrible looking. Cancel the add hardware wizard if it appears
(ignoring it works too). Then run the ATI installation from the downloaded
setup file.

I've heard several others say that they just install the new over the old
with no problems but, personally, have not tried that method.

I kept having the same problem until I read somewhere that if the computer
had a always-on connection (not dialup) to the Internet when doing the
Ininstall/update, XP would install the "current" driver from the Windows
Update site, thus not installing the generic VGA driver. I was skeptical,
but blocked my broadband connection at the router, then did the
uninstall/update. Everything worked as needed -- after the uninstall, the
generic VGA driver was indeed installed on reboot and I was then able to do
the ATI update.

I was surprised but happy.

Good luck.
