Updating a text date field?

It seems to me that this sould be simple but I can't figure it out... I'm
wanting to drive the contents of three fields of a newsletter's heading by
updating the first instance of the information within the document. The
"volume" and "issue" fields are numeric and are behaving as expected, but
the "date" field is being less cooperative. I first tried using a simple
formula field to refer to the text formfield, but the formula field instists
on converting the contents to a numeric equivalent, which I do not want.
Using the REF field kept the contents in text format but requires that I
manually update the field. How can I use a single text field to
automatically drive the contents of other instances of the same information
within the document? Thanks for any assistance.

Alan D.

Hi Alan,

Since you mentioned a "text formfield" I'll assume you're using a protect
form... In the Properties dialog of the formfield, check the "Calculate on
exit" option. Then you can use a Ref field (or, equivalently, a
Cross-reference) and it will update automatically.

I do have the "Calculate on exit" option checked! Also, I tried adding a
cross reference per your suggestion, but I am unable to use a word in a
heading to generate the reference. Nor can I add a bookmark or formfield in
the heading to try to make the reference go the other way. Any other
thoughts? BTW, I'm not married to using protected forms, as I'll be the only
one using the document anyway.

I think I've identified the issue - it appears that when the document is
protected, even if it's just the section that contains the formfields, the
headers/footers are protected as well and so are not updating. Any way
around this, aside from just making my heading part of the regular text?

Put the material somewhere within the body of your document (even formatted
as white) and use a Ref or StyleRef field to pull it into your
headers/footers. If it is formatted as white, it will not print but will
take up space.
