updating a subform from another form

The subform on the main form shows a list of steps to a
work order. The steps are listed as titles to each step
with a button to access step details. The step details
form allows you to add or edit new steps. How do I
requery the subform (in the background) on the main form
when a step is added or edited in the step detail form.
currently i have to exit both and reopen the main form to
show the changes.
