Have you tried to use the Windows XP CD you originally have? If so, what
was the result? You may want to do this, then install critical updates as
needed. Not pretty, but a workaround to get you back up and running.
I'd also like clarification, if I may, in order to further investigate your
issue. You downloaded and installed the Office 97 security patch. Did this
installation complete? Or did it fail? My questions comes from trying to
determine when your system files may have been re-written.
Please let me know, and I will do some investigation of this issue with the
Office and Windows teams at Microsoft.
