Since downloading and installing the latest updates for Windows XP Home a
few days ago, I am now unable to access the update site. When I click on
the Windows Update offered under Tools, IE never loads the site, just a
black page. Any thoughts?

You receive a scripting error or a blank page when you visit the Windows

Register JSCRIPT.DLL
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll
Click OK.

You may also need to re-register the mshtml.dll

I registered jscript.dll but couldn't do so with mshtml.dll. Received the
following error message: "mshtml.dll was loaded, but the RegisterServer
entry point was not found. This file cannot be registered."

Then you have probably installed IE7.
mshtml.dll used to registerable in IE6.
