Updates Won't Install

Late model laptop PC , will not process Windows updates. Otherwise
works OK. Just keeps giving the message that a restart is required to
install important updates. Updates are not installed on restart, and
the message just keeps repeating. How can I get the needed updates to
install on this ( Dell ) laptop. Please help ...

There are various references to Windows Update "Fixit" file.
It resets the services like BITS, which Windows Update depends on.
Apparently, it also has an "aggressive" mode, which may reset more
than those.

There is a log file for Windows Update you can look at, as well
as the GUI in the OS, which lists the updates that are in "Pending"
state or whatever. Some updates depend on other ones getting
installed first.

Most likely you need to select poweroff, rather than restart, to
actually install the updates. The icon for shutdown changes when
there are updates needing a shutdown, waiting to be installed.
