Hey Peter
I am using windows xp with service pack 2 I did a complete reformat to
perform a clean install in December last year...
I have found in the past just updateing makes things unstable and had to
reformat anyway
I am using the manual update feature in internet explorer 6.0 (tools on the
tool bar windows update) to get the monthly security updates
the critical updates for June and July show 0 kbytes and 0 min
The optional updates work fine..
I installed high speed in January and In April I took my modem out of the
computer and uninstalled the drivers
Automatic updates for windows tried three times to reload the drivers for
the modem
which was setting on the desk beside me....
Automatic updates has not worked since and manual updates shows the critical
updates are there to be downloaded
but 0 kbytes and 0 min beside each update and a black exclamation mark in a
blue bubble beside those.....
I have been using the windows catalogue to manually download the updates and
install them and reboot the system...
Returning to windows update after rebooting , through internet explorer
tools windows update shows 0 critical updates to download
viewing the instalation history the critical updates for June and July are
not listed....
I have run three spyware programs spybot search and destroy 1.4 , addaware
and microsoft anti spyware
in normal mode and in safe mode The results are 0 for each scan....
After every session cookies and offline content are removed and history
cleared using internet explorer
I have noticed that windows secutity center lets some browser add ons the be
installed without any choice in the matter..
I perfer to run whats necessary ....bells whistles and fancy tool bars serve
no purpose to me...
David
