I was disconnected twice this evening from the internet with an explaination
that my security was at risk and to make sure I had the recent updates.
I checked and it said that I still needed sp2. I have ordered the CD, but I
have the automatic updates checked on my system. I assumed they tell me which
ones they would be. I wanted to download sp2 but I can't sit here for 9 hours
waiting for it to download, so sent for the CD.
The update has been dowmloading for hours and is at 54%. Could this be sp2?
and what happens if I shut down?

It's good that you wrote in. Let's address things one at a time:

First, no Microsoft product will disconnect you from the Internet because
your security is "at risk." Microsoft doesn't work that way. Are you certain
that this message came from Microsoft? Careful now, because there are any
number of scammers and hucksters on the Internet who are preying on people's
lack of knowledge.

If you responded to such a message in the past, it's possible that your
computer is now infected with spyware, which you must remove.

If you have the automatic update feature of Windows enabled, you should know
that there are several ways that this works. If you so choose, critical
security updates can be automatically downloaded - directly from Microsoft -
and installed on your computer. Or, you can choose to have the updates
downloaded but not installed, in which case you decide when to do the
installation. Or, you can choose only to be notified when a security update
is available. Which method have you chosen?

If you chose to have security updates automatically installed, and your
computer is more than a month old, it's likely that you already have SP 2
installed. (To check, go to Start > Control Panel > System.)

If you suspect that the download is, in fact, SP 2 you will cause no harm by
cancelling the download. No changes are made to your computer until the
download is complete (and even then no changes will be made until after the
installer has checked your system first.)

Thank you for your reply. I have spyware every day in "tracking" but that
seems to be the norm. The updates started downloading when I came on this
morning, but on systems still says SP1. Strange about the messages from IE
when it says it's having a problem and has to close, and I am disconnected
from the internet. The other one was from Microsoft saying something about my
computer not being secure and to make sure I have all the updates..Sorry I
don't remember it word for word. Anyway I will take more notice next time
and I don't click on anything. but thanks for answering. DMV

ok Sp2 has been dowloaded and system checked before it installed. I am still
getting that error box from IE and clicking "don't send" and I am not
disconnected from the internet. I am now getting a web page headed "gen0cide"
but just pops up and says "page cannot be displayed" When connected my MSN
messenger "pop up" says that I am connected to it on another computer and
click to connect. When I click on that box, it says I have been disconnected
from another .netmeeting program..What does that mean..Has Sp2 messed up my
computer? Thanks dmv

Thanks alot for the addy. I will keep the info but for now I did find it in
files when I searched, but have been doing that from time to time. Deleted it
for now and will keep an eye on it..can't figure why my spywares or norton
didn't pick it up and delete..dmv

If you think you can manually delete spyware on your own, you are only
fooling yourself. It's not that easy. But attempts at manual deletion often
interfere with a spyware detector's ability to spot the spyware. That's
probably why "my spywares or norton didn't pick it up and delete."

You are right about that. My little "friend" gen0cide popped up when I dialed
up this morning, but not listed in my files. I am going back into the addy
you sent and see if anything else in there helps. I really don't want to foul
around with the registry, so I may need someone to walk me through it.
Thanks. dmv

Eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
