When I attempt I get a message with the selected updates
in RED and a statement üpdates not installed" try
again. I've re-tried several times, but no sucess.

Any ideas, help ??

That happened to me and it wasn't any of the "normal" problems.
It was because I've setup a "hosts" file to block lookup of
ad sites, and microsoft just switch windows update to redirect
through the akami network which is used by so many ad sites
that I include it (actually the site I download it from includes it
and I don't object) in my hosts file.

Temporarily swapping out all the blocked sites in my hosts file
got me to windows update (after which, I swapped them all
back in :-).
