I went to the place where it had the updates or whatever
for internet explorer 6. I chose to download several of
these. Now on my desktop there are little icons
representing these. Does this mean that the download
worked? Can I delete these from my desktop without doing
any harm to anything?

Hi Sindi :-)

If I understand, when you did the download, it downloaded them to the
desktop? Then just double click on each one, one at a time to install them,
then reboot in between each one in case one causes a problem, you will know
which one to uninstall. You don't mention which Windows version you have,
but, if possible, create a manual Restore Point before starting the
installations case you need to go back to a time before the installation.

Hope this helps.

Jan :)

That isn't the customary process in which Windows Updates downloads and
installs Sindi. You must have gone to Windows *Downloads* and not Windows
*Updates*. Normally, you should go here:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Then, you click Scan for updates. It then does so and notifies you if
updates are detected for the present state of your machine. Then, you select
the ones that are offered, and WU (Windows Updates) installs them right then
and there. So, if you've done any other method to obtain *Updates* or gone
to *any* other site, you are on the wrong track. While Windows Downloads is
a reputable and trustworthy site from which to get downloads, it is not the
right site to determine what you need for your PC. The main thing is that if
you do somehow successfully install anything that was obtained in that
fashion, you stand a good chance of making a mistake, and *breaking* updates
and systems already installed.

So if I understand you correctly; that little icons were placed on your
desktop; I can't see how that happened through the convention means.

Perhaps they have names? What are they called?

This is what I have downloaded:
AC97CONS.BAS
ACLREAD.TXT
BD97CONS.BA
CONSTANT.XLS
OF97CONS.BAS
OL97CONS.BAS
PP97CONS.BAS
Shortcut(2)to ACL
Shortcut to ACLFIX.EXE
VBABDR8.GID
VBACONS.BAS
WD97CONS.BAS
XL57CONS.BAS
XL97CON.BAS
VBABDR8.CNT
WCO993.DOC
VBABRD8.GID
AACLFIX.EXE
Some of these may be for OFfice 97 which is what I really
started out to do but decided to also update IE6.
I went to the site you referrered and the only IE6
upgrades were different languages which I do not need.
There was nothing here about Office 97 updates which I
need.
When I clicked to open the ones I did download it doesn't
work. A box appears that says "open with."
Will await for an answer and hopefully I will be able to
find this discussion again. This is a very difficult
forum to find your own posts again.
Thanks for your help.

My gosh! *All of that??!* This is of major proportions... where to begin????

One should only do so many updates at a time, so one will know what is being
installed. If there are problems which arise one can determine that which
was the most recent change to the machine. Doing all of these additions at
once will surely lead to problems. Confusion is one of them, and that has
already taken it's toll, as you don't know which were for IE and which were
for Office 97.

OK, first - I use Office XP (on a W98se machine). There is an update link
for Office right on my Outlook 2002 for instance. Doesn't your Office 97
offer this?

I would just stick all of those "updates" into some folder somewhere, and
start fresh by first accessing *Windows Updates* and let it do a scan of
your PC. Let *IT* select what you need. If nothing is presented, then
nothing is needed. It's as simple as that. That's the way it is.

Hmmm.... That's odd, 'cause it obviously worked for me without crashing -
BSOD'ing my PC. I had saved a copy to my PC at the time I posted this ... no
problem. I played that one... no problem. I just checked that link now this
