updates & downloads not working

I am running windows XP home edition with sp1. since its install a few weeks ago I have not been able to download any thing other then a few small skins for winamp. all works well till the popup that shows download progress. I may see some file transfer and the it hangs or it just hangs at start. On the animation of file going into folder I have a red * at the folder every time the file goes into the folder. Yes I am on an admin account, and I have looked every where I know of and checked settings. It seems as if the down takes longer the 1/2 a sec. it locks up. I am on cable
one question I have is could the sp1 part cause this problem
also if it can how does one install xp with out the sp1 pack
more info on my system is its a 650 mhz, 40 gig hard drive, 128 megs of ram
I was told on here once before that it takes more ram to run xp then I had but have found this to be wrong
thats to say I know many with xp and 128 meg of ram and no problems
any ideas?
 
sp1 isnt the problem; a red* on the download folder might suggest that that
folder isnt available for some reason. Have you tried download/save to a
different location?
