I recently installed a windows update as I usually do. When I rebooted my computer at the prompt to restart, to my horror I found that all of my favorites were gone in IE. I am not sure what caused this, but the only changes I made was the update for windows... is there any way to fix this or rollback a day before it happened?

I doubt your favorites are "gone." Look in C:\Documents and Settings\%profiles%\Favorites. Make sure this folder still has desktop.ini in it and contains only:

[.ShellClassInfo]
CLSID2={1A9BA3A0-143A-11CF-8350-444553540000}
ConfirmFileOp=0

You may need to show all hidden files and system files. Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder settings... | View. The options to do this are in the List Box there near the bottom.
