Updater Not Working!

I received a message that the Antispyware expired today, followed the link to
the program that supposedly extends it to July, downloaded and installed it
three times. It doesn't work. I still get the message that the program
expires today.

OK, I solved it. I had the program uninstall what I already had on my
machine and then downloaded again and installed that. Now it's not only
working, but my original settings were maintained.

Microsoft should have had a note explaining that at their Web site.

Take care.

Alan

I've also tried uninstalling the current version and installing the update.
I get the same result, "sorry version time expired..."

i'm getting the same thing. when i tried to upgrade it still says that its
expired 12/31/2005 and you can't get into the client to check any settings.
when i uninstalled/reinstalled same thing. is MSFT listening? i'm on
windows 2000.

This sequence is not a requirement for a successful update--even though it
worked in your case.

There seems to be a cache holding the old version somewhere in the
distribution mechanism.

When you run the download, the first prompt you see should be an offer to
upgrade the in-place version. If you see something different, you have the
old code.

I just reformatted my computer and installed a full, liscenced copy of XP pro
and then SP2... when I download the antispyware program from MS's website, it
tells me the program has expired as of 12/31/2005... thoughts?

Retry the download. Keep trying until you get a version which offers to
upgrade the one you have in place as the first prompt you see when running
the download.

One approach is to look at reputable third-party download sites for a
version with an appropriate date--December of 2005, as I recall.

I had the same problem. Have a look at CJGS's last entry on my question
'Antispyware Beta1 1.0.701' dated 12/29/2005. This procedure might help you.

Mike Holden

I see that procedure, Mike. I need to convince myself that there's more
than just luck of the draw involved--but it does seem worth trying.

Mr. Sanderson - the trouble is, if you look at my previous post, I just
reformatted, so there is no 'in place version' to update. I'm trying to
install clean...

Sorry - the download should either install clean or update the previous
version.

Here's something to try--if you download and install clean, and find that it
is still the expired version try start, all programs, Microsoft Antispyware,
Microsoft Antispyware update.

See if that prompts you to get the new version downloaded.

Bill; I had already tried that. Just FYI, today I tried downloading again
and installing and it just worked. . . odd! At any rate, it's working now.
Don't know what the deal was. Thanks for all the help.

There's an issue somewhere in the download chain of an old code version
being present--it isn't completely clear to me where this is--and whether
you get it or not seems to be largely a matter of luck (i.e. bad....).

As far as I can see--you've finally had the good luck to receive the right
code.

This update mechanism won't be used very many more times--we won't have it
to complain about once Beta2 appears.

Sorry to hear that--there are a couple of posts indicating that running the
updater brought (after a pause) an offer of an update which succeeded.

My recommendation is to continue trying the download--saving the file to
your desktop, and double-clicking it to install. If the first prompt you
see is an offer to upgrade--you've got the right version.

If this fails continually, MajorGeeks seems to be a a good workaround--i.e.
they are serving up the right file, and getting it from them seems to work.

I'm glad that worked, but I'm also not convinced that it is the only way--it
is a bad lesson for folks to learn--they go looking for Microsoft code, and
find that they must go to a third-party site to get it.

So I want to figure out how to get this fixed without resorting to that
link. I'm also not convinced that this proves that the problem is at
Microsoft's end--it may simply be that the alternative location works around
the caching issue.

I've been going through this pain on my Tablet PC. The links on the Microsoft
site are to a November build. Downloaded and ran it and it prompted me to
upgrade or uninstall. Upgraded and got the expiry warning ... three times.

Even rebooting and reinstalling failed. I notice that the uninstall leaves
the folders and some files behind: not exactly my definition of "uninstall".

Very sloppy stuff from Microsoft. Maybe that sloppiness is leaving duff
information in the registry? Maybe it's sloppy housekeeping in their file
storage.

Whatever it is, it doesn't exactly increase my confidence in Microsoft,
especially as I wrongly assumed that as I had MS Anti-Spyware set to load
with Windows it might alert me if there was a problem. It didn't, so I would
have remained oblivious to it not actually running.

I'm running Win XP Pro SP2.
