Updated Scanlogic drivers for generic enclosure

I was given a generic USB/Firewire enclosure 3 years ago, into which I put my
40 gig white label 3.5 inch drive that I took out of my Power Mac when I
dontated that Power Mac to a school. The drive worked great as a back-up to
my new Power Book.

I now want to give the drive to my wife to back up her Dell PC running
Windows XP. However, the drivers only work in Windows up to 98 and 98SE, and
supposedly no driver is required for Win 2000 and ME.

I installed the driver in the Dell, and of course it did not work. I found
the INSTALL.LOG, printed it out and removed all the installed files and
folders. When looking at the properties of the files, two of them reveal
they are made by Scanlogic and are defined as drivers. They are:
slusbgen.sys
usb2ide.sys

There is no info on the other files and folders.

Can I obtain updated drivers to enable this generic enclosure to work with
XP? Without a clear manufacturer of the enclosure (the CD-ROM with the old
drivers just says “Combo Setup†on it with some
USB/Mac/Windows/GeoPort/Firewire logos). Can someone point me in the right
direction. Before doing all this I did try to get XP to see the drive,
hoping it would pop up on My Computer. I right-clicked on My Computer to get
into Disk Management (local) but it didn’t show up. Perhaps I don’t need an
updated driver and just need to try a different procedure in XP? Any advice
would be appreciated. Thank you.

The first is www.usb-drivers.com/drivers/32/32842.htm. Give it
a try. Note, however, that the drivers, if any, should have been
written explicitly for Windows XP (with Windows 2000 possibly OK).
 
Misto: Thank you for the advice. After posting my query I went back to
Google to search for answers (I had tried there first), used different search
terms and came up with that (1) I shouldn't needany special drivers to
install for XP to see the USB device and (2)tolook in Device amanager for my
type of device and see if it is listed there as not working. I also decided
to move the USB plug from one port on the back of the Dell to another one
next to it.

Lo an behold, the drive showed up in device Manager under USB devices as a
"Scanlogic device" but had a yellow exclamation markon it because it was not
working. I went through the official XP Troubleshooting process (I think you
doubleclick on the device), that didn't work, but the Troubleshooter takes
you to the next step after that (unplugging and replugging it back in) and
that worked. The drive showed up in My Computer, I right clicked on MC,
Manage > Disk Management, and I reformatted the drive and gave it a name.,
Now it's on the using the XP backup program on my wife's Dell!!!!
