On the Windows Update site, in the left-side panel, there is a link
to the "Get help and support" web page. This "Getting Help and
Support" web page has a link named "Windows Update
troubleshooter". If you click this link your browser will open
a Web Page that contains resolutions to common problems.

Under the category titled: "Problem reaching Windows Update"
there is a problem titled: "While the Windows Update Web site is
loading, you receive Initialization Error 0x80072F76". Perhaps
following the suggestions given in the Resolution section would
remedy your problem.

And if your problem is not resolved using the Resolution mentioned
above, the aforementioned "Getting Help and Support" web page
has a link named "view tips and solutions for users like yourself".
If you click this link your browser will open a Web Page to the
Peer-to-Peer Forum for Microsoft Windows Update (AKA the
microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup). That is the
newsgroup where you will find the windowsupdate experts.
So perhaps if you post your question there, a windowsupdate
expert can help you resolve your problem.

Well that was the only instance that roughly corresponded to your problem.
However i am wondering. There are changes afoot for the update site as
microsoft move from version 4 to version 5 (version 5 will be available in
the soob to be released Windows XP Service pack 2) Your problem may be
caused by the site itself rather than your pc. This incidentally is only a
guess.
Where abouts are you getting the error message? Is it as soon as you try to
access the site or has the site appeared and is the update site scanning for
updates. i'm just wondering whether you could get to the windows update
catalogue in order to download any specific updates that you need?
