Have reformated winXP pro which is a pre service pack 2 version and now when
I click to go to update my computer alloways freezes. How can I get to update?

Louis,

If this is an OEM installation of XP with Norton Antivirus preinstalled,
then the system locking up can be caused by thousands of 0 byte OEM
files located in WINDOWS\inf
Do a Search of that location and delete all 0 byte oem*.inf files if
that's the case

If that's not the case, then it's most likely that the installed
security software/antivirus is preventing Windows Update from either
running scripts and/or is blocking ActiveX software controls from being
installed. Consult the Help files of any such product to see how to
temporarily disable or make an exception for the Windows Update site.

No AV/security software installed ? Then obtain SP2 by downloading the
entire package from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
OR, order the CD and pay for shipping *only* :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Then read these articles prior to installing SP2:
