Update won't work

I got an automatic update on Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0.
I click on it and it says it is installing, but nothing happens.
It symbol goes away after a while, but comes back again. This has happened
a dozen times on this one update; all the others have been fine.

It happened at the same time I put CA Internet Security on and a number of
things went bad. They all went back to normal when I deleted CAIS, but this
still won't work. Maybe it is just a coincidence.
 
I "fixed" it, but now have a further question.

I went to Microsoft and had it check to see what updates I needed; I though
maybe that would work better.
It told me I had the update ".net framework 1.1 SP1" hidden, and urged me to
unhide it. I told it to go ahead and it installed it and the otherone.

What on earth does that mean? How did I come to have it hidden?
Was it unable to install the one update while the other was hidden?
Geez I miss DOS.

Have you done a *find* in the registry for CAIS ?
