Update Windows XP - Crashes

When going to do a routine update, the scan completes and displays a list of updates that are available. All good except, when I start to scroll down the list and read specifics about the updates listed, I get massive crashes, and, consistently at that point

Had the same issue with windows98 second edition, although now it is XP

Anybody have this issue before and resolve it

Ok a good point to the site above. Clicked "U," about a third of the way down the page found:

On first skim of this page, looks like I did a lot of what it says. Will have to study this article in depth and see if it helps. Will get back with more information when I have more time. Need to set aside a chunk of time and start fresh tommorrow.
