Stating the bleedin' obvious: update it and continue to not use it.

No, that would be utterly stupid.

Just remove it and you'll never be bothered with such popups.
Copy this string and paste it into Start > Run, then click okay:

Rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

OOps! My son - who is infinitely wiser than me in such matters - has, on
this bright mothers day told me to go to add/remove progs then go to the box
on the left which says addremove windoze components then select messenger to
be removed. almost as simple as me.
Thanks guys for info.

This is what I was told to do:

To stop this, close Outlook Express, then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

After this, Windows Messenger will no longer be started with Outlook
Express, so you won't
see this message.

In Outlook Express;
Tools/{your messenger service}/options/General tab
uncheck the box "always run this program"

Sooo you can still use OE but without Win Messenger.
Personally I don't like the concept of the Messenger service and have
heard how those without firewalls get popup spammed.
You can stop the messenger service in Administrative Tools/Services.
Stop the service and either change it to manual or disable it.
