I know this is redundant, but what are we suppossed to do about this update?
It says it was successful but...NOT! Do we just keep trying to download and
update? Or give up till someone figures out a fix? Or has someone figured a
fix and I just haven't found it?

If you are getting repeated downloads the definitions currently in place are
not fully installed.

The fix for this is to try two possible "repairs."

1) do the resolution steps in this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

Then try updating--try both methods--from within Windows Defender--help,
about, check for updates. Or, Start, all programs, Windows Update.

If this does not take care of the problem--i.e. keep further updates from
continuing to occur--or if you can't complete those steps without an error
message, then:

Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Install it, and run it from the start, all programs menu. Look for Windows
Defender Signatures, and remove this.

Then try updating again, as described above.

There may be a small number of folks for whom this process doesn't solve
this issue, but that is not at all clear to me--posts such as "I've tried
everything" don't convey that clearly enough, I'm afraid.

So--try those steps and let me know--if neither of them gets your system to
a point where the current definition version is in place, and new updates
are not continually offered, I'd be glad to see whether I can think of
something more to try.

-- Thanks, it worked perfectly. Got it the first time.
