update re*arranges desktop icons

I just checked "YES" to accept a dozen updates.
(some Windows, some HP).
While updating, the updater re*arranged my desktop icons.
Before this happens again, where is the utility that
stores their position? If Windows provides that function,
I cannot find it.

I don't think there is such a utility.
 
Such a utility eg 'save desktop icons' is provided by third parties
I note you said some HP updates, its generally a bad idea to install driver
updates from winupdate
Driver updates should only be taken from hw manufacturers sites and then
only if it cures a problem or provides greater functionality - if a driver
aint broke dont fix it
 
The driver updates should be updated from the SYSTEM manufacturers web site,
not the hardware or OS web sites. Hardware manufacturers modify the software
and drivers from other sites may not work.
