I just got some ________ Microsoft updates. Something turned on my modem
speaker. How do I turn it back off?

Thank you VERY much.

Do you know why they make unasked for changes to your system like that?
They've screwed up a lot of things here over time.

Here's how to get those modem sounds "On", "Off", "Loud", "Medium" &
"Low".
(These are the most common settings, but your brand may be different)

Take this path:
Start
Settings, Control Panel
Double Click on Phone and Modem
Modems Tab
Select, Properties
Modem Tab
Set Speaker Volume as desired
OK your way out

And/or

Take this path:
Start
Settings, Control Panel
Double Click on Phone and Modem
Modems Tab
Select, Properties
Advanced Tab

In the Extra initialization commands Box, enter one or more of the
following:

Setting What it does:

M0 Speaker Off (its M zero)
M1 Speaker On until carrier received
M2 Speaker always On
M3 Speaker disabled while dialing and after carrier received

L0 Speaker volume Low (its L zero)
L1 Speaker volume Low (same as L0)
L2 Speaker volume Medium
L3 Speaker volume High

After entering the desired setting, i.e., M2L2 OK your way out to the
Desktop and you are finished. Most folks don't want the sounds from the
modem speaker and just enter M0. "Silence is Golden".<G>

Note: The speaker referred to is the modem speaker, not the computer or
external speakers (if equipped).
