Update or Upgrade?

My business has a server with windows 2000 advanced. The hardware is out of
date and needs to be upgraded. The current system works OK for us, but it
has not had any Windows updates since its original installation in 2002.

1) I am afraid to perform all of the updates on my current system for fear
it will crash or disable the server along the way.

2) Money is tight, so purchasing Windows server 2003 with 20 cals is a
challenge. I have no IT support, so bringing in someone is expensive.

3) The server has a shared accounting/MRP application on it along with being
used as file storage.

The software was not OEM installed, so I believe I could install it on a new
server, perform all the updates, then transfer the data. The question is,
what would you do? Save the money and use windows 2000 server advanced on a
new machine? OR bite the bullet and buy the server 2003? How long could I
expect the 2000 version to be supported with patches etc?

Personally I would bite the bullet and go for Windows 2003 Server. Perhaps a
smaller server with some network storage.

I think you answered your own question before you even asked it.

"Money is tight, so purchasing Windows server 2003 with 20 cals is a

With money being tight and 20 or fewer workstations, I see no real advantage
to upgrade at this time. Use your existing software on the new server.
Although there'll be no more service paks, Windows 2000 will be supported
with patches thru July of 2010.. By then maybe money won't be so tight.and
there'll be alternatives. Windows 2003 Server might not be the best choice
in 2010.
