Update on computer shut down

Beginning last Thursday, I receive a message when shutting down my computer
regarding an update being installed. When I click shut down, the blue screen
with the Microsoft logo and the words Microsoft Windows XP comes up. I then
get the message that the system is logging me off. Then a message that my
personal settings are being saved. In the past, the next message would be
windows is shutting down, and then the computer would turn off. Now, after
the save personal settings message, I receive the following alternating
messages:

"Updates are being installed (1 of 1)", then it changes to "Do not turn off
or uplug your computer it will turn off automatically".

Since I'm never told what is being updated, I've been turning the computer
off manually. Obviously, that's not a solution as the same thing is
happening everytime I shut down the computer.

This has never happened in the 10 years I've had computers, and with all the
spyware, trojans, worms, etc. floating around the internet, I guess I'm a bit
paranoid. I am currently using a Dell dimension 8200 with Windows XP SP2.
I've updated and run Zone Alarm spyware, Norton antivirus, Windows defender
and Spybot, but the most they find is tracking cookies.

Any suggestions, ideas, guidance anyone may have will be greatly
appreciated. Thank you.

That can be normal behavior depending on how you have Windows Updates
configured but usually I see an option to shut down the computer or install
updates and then shut down the computer. What I would do is go to Control
Panel/system/automatic updates to see how you have it configured. If you
want to do it completely manually select the option for turn off automatic
updates and then be sure to check for updates at least every other week. You
also can go into Control Panel/add and remove programs to see what updates
have been installed and when. The links below may help. --- Steve
