Hi,

I have two different laptops running Windows 2000 Professional with Service
Pack 2 installed. Whenenver i run the update program to apply the latest
service pack or run the mircosoft installer to install applications it just
stops during the installation without any errors.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Any help gratefully received.

Windows Update starts an ActiveX control on/from Microsoft's website.
You must allow this to proceed but may have your security settings
forbid that. For me (Win2k Pro SP4, IE 5.5 SP2), that is controlled
in Internet Explorer -> Tools ->Internet Options -> Security tab
->Custom Level -> ActiveX settings lead the list. My customized
settings are:

Download signed ActiveX controls: Prompt
Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disable
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disable
Run ActvieX controls and plug-ins: Enable
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting: Prompt

The first must not be "Disable" for the update to work. Note that
some settings on your machine(s) may have changed simply by installing
SP2.

Cheers, Jochen

There are no errors appearing in the event logs.

It is not the windows update that is causing the problem, it is the
update.exe used when installing service packs. Windows update downloads the
updates successfully but the service pack itself fails when installing.

Jason.
