suspicious update icon

I am running Windows XP. When I shut down my computer,
there is now a "Shield" with the Microsoft colors on the
Shut Down icon telling me I will have "important updates"
installed when I shut down. There is an option within this
new window allowing me to shut down without getting the
updates. I am suspicious. How can I verify that the
updates are legitimate ? There is also a yellow "shield"
or "lock" icon on the bottom part of my screen when I am on
the computer and when I place the cursor over it, it tells
me updates are ready for my computer and to click on it.
There is nothing else there to identify it as Microsoft or
anyone else.

Have you installed the critical security MS updates that
were advertised all over the place a few days ago?
If not, please do it now.
How are you set up to be notified by MS when new updates
are available? I get the yellow shield icon because I'm
set up to be notified when updates are available. I
prefer to stop what I'm doing and let the actual
installation do its job while I have a cup of coffee.
If you want to be sure that it is from MS just go to MS
update site where you can read all the details of each
upgrade.
I cannot over-stress the importance of installing all
critical security updates as soon as possible.
I hope this puts your mind at ease.
