I am running Vista Home Premium on a recently purchased Toshiba laptop.
Looking at the update history all the updates seem to have gone well
although some failed first time around but sunsequently were successful.
The exception is KB937287 which has tried to install several times (manually
and automatically) and is now causing me grief and reboots every time I
start up. The error code returned is 80070BC9. A search of the microsoft
web site has not helped me at all. I found elsewhere that someone had had
to reinstall KB943899 to get this working but when I try this I get a
message to say it is not applicaple to my system.......
Any suggestions please.

Oh dear! sfc returns with the message that 'a repair is pending' and
requests me to reboot.
Rebooting takes me through the 'Windows is configuring updates' cycle (with
another reboot) so I hid the update and tried it all again in case the
routine to install updates was interfering with sfc. I also tried running
sfc in a maintenace console dos window and rebooting back to the dos prompt
but sfc reports the same 'repair pending'.
I would guess that something is corrupted somewhere.

Try running chkdsk /f

chkdsk /f was one of my routine checks (I also ran the tool via disk
properties to test the drive). All was clear.

The mystery deepens.....
I looked back on the update history and found KB937287 installed
successfully on 14th. Since then it has tried repeatedly to install the
same update and failed - as it should if already installed. Problem is that
the list of installed updates does not include KB937287 which would explain
why it keeps trying to install.

So problem now is how can I verify that it is actually installed and if so
how can I get it to show as installed?

I gave up in the end and backed up all my data and did a full system
recovery from the Toshiba supplied DVD. This went well and I installed my
firewall and antivirus but no other applications. I then ran Microsoft
Update and it installed a whole host of updates and rebooted. Update then
showed just KB937287 available for install. I rebooted the system a couple
of times to make sure all was stable then told Update to install KB937287
which went smoothly!

I ran the machine for a while and tried some exrtra reboots and installed my
main applications. The update still looks as if it has gone cleanly. Most
of my data has also been restored OK.
