My XP SP3 machine valiantly tries to install this update but always fails.
It seems to have no trouble installing other updates. What's with this
one??

See the section "Updates from the previous cumulative Windows time zone
update" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976098. If you do not reside
in one of those time zones, you can "hide" this update.
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)
2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:
Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.
3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB976098 and hide it ("Don't show me this
update again").
4. Start the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

Joe said:Thanks! I was about to follow your directions when I looked in COntrol
Panel/Add/Remove Programs. There is an update in there with an almost
similar name called Hotfix for Windows XP (KB976098-v2) installed
11/26/2009. Are these the same? The scan of the system shows the update
(KB976098) is missing and Auto Update wants to install itbut can't. IS
that
because the update is alreadyinstalled?
