Update installation query

I have Windows XP Home SP3. A scan with my "Belarc Advisor" indicates that
update KB923561 has to be re-installed. Yet the Windows update website shows
that this update was successfully completed on 16-04-2009. Is
re-installation really necessary now and how do I do this?

What version of "Wordpad.exe" do you actually have on the machine?

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories
"Wordpad.exe"

If you have KB923561 sucessfully installed then "Wordpad.exe" should be
showing as version 5.1.2600.5584.

If you choose to uninstall and reinstall KB923561, uninstall it using
ADD|REMOVE Programs. Then download and install the manual package found
here:
KB923561

Is "Security Update for Windows XP (KB923561)" listed in Add/Remove Programs
(after making certain the Show Updates box at the top is checked)?

My computer is a HP and I don't have Wordpad.exe. I have a Microsoft Works
Word Processor.
The security update KB923561 is listed in my Add/Remove Programs also dated
as installed on 16-04-2009.

If you have XP, you have Wordpad. Donald already told you the location:

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories

If KB923561 is listed in Add/Remove Programs, I'd say you have it. :) I
would listen to Microsoft before Belarc in this situation.

Trust me, Wordpad is installed & present on your computer.

You do not need to uninstall/reinstall the update.

Thanks again for your assistance. Obviously you are experienced with
computers and very confident about this. However I checked in the
Accessories folder as suggested and in my computer it is empty. In a
"Search" for Wordpad however it came up with 18 references for Wordpad in
C:\1386 that used 4 different file names: EX_file, IN-file, CH_ and HL_ I
was unable to open any of them. I have noticed before that Hewlett Packard
load their programs like Windows XP Home on computers not necessarily
identical to the original. I noticed in the Windows file association
website that there are several free download programs to open assorted
files. As I am not a computer wizard the question is do I need to go through
this procedure plus other possible problems hoping I'll be successful just
to confirm a particular Wordpad version?
Perhaps I should go with the Windows Update indication that KB923561 was
installed successfully.

As I stated in a previous reply to you, "wordpad.exe" should be located in
the following folder on your hard drive:
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories

If it's not located there then you have somehow deleted it from your
machine("it is a common mistake people make when doing a thorough clean-up
of their computer"), and that is why Belarc is flagging it(because it can
not find the file "wordpad.exe").

Use ADD|REMOVE Programs to uninstall KB923561, then check to see if the
uninstall process put "wordpad.exe" back into the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories

If it did, then download the manual install package for KB923561 and install
it to updade "wordpad.exe".
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...9a-503e-43dd-a78a-c1bc764fd213&displaylang=en

If no joy, remove KB923561 once again using ADD|Remove Programs.
Following the instructions here for installing WordPad:
http://www.ehow.com/how_5087979_reinstall-wordpad.html
Then reinstall KB923561:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...9a-503e-43dd-a78a-c1bc764fd213&displaylang=en

Restore Wordpad.Exe (Line 308, Right)

Your assistance was much appreciated. I have now installed Wordpad,
uninstalled and reinstalled KB 923561 and all seems to be OK now. Even a new
Belarc scan now approves. As a matter of interest the Kellys_Korner
restoration brought back an older version of Wordpad and I re-installed it
with Donald's website link. This had the correct version.
Again Thanks.

You're welcome Jan, glad you got it sorted out.
