Hi,

I have just installed win2k on a compaq presario 5170.
After the clean install everything works properly except
the soud card from ESS1869. The sound is ok only for about
a second and then it goes to silent almost immediately. To
get noise I have to continuously put the slide bar in the
Microsoft volmume control louder.
Did any of you have the same problem or do you have an
idea on how to resolve this issue?

Txs in advance
Jorre.

Check the hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest Windows 2000
driver for your device.

Go through the MS updates. When you go through applying the security
fixes and service packs, there'll be a selection for getting an updated
ESS driver.

I have the same problem, on a different machine. I own a Compaq Presario
5010. It came with Windows 95 installed, and a free upgrade to Windows 98.
Apparently, Windows 98 install overwrites the sound card driver, so I had to
go to the Compaq website to get a new driver. All was well for Windows 98.
But now I have upgraded to Windows 2000 and there are no upgrades on the
Compaq website for drivers for Windows 2000 and my computer.
I did download the drivers for ESS sound cards from Microsoft, but the
sound still doesn't work. I'm assuming that those drivers aren't for my
actual card. Now what do I do? I don't really want to go back to Windows 98,
and I don't think my computer is fast enough to run XP.

Windows 2000 should include drivers for your ESS 18xx series audio card. If
your computer came with Window 95, it probably will not work with Windows
XP. If you're still having trouble you can try this page:

http://www.esstech.com/techsupp/drivers.shtm#isa

Note the part BELOW the chart (the chart which states no driver is
available) where they provide the Windows 2000 drivers which are included
with your OS. If this doesn't work I would wonder whether you have had your
sound card upgraded over the years you've had this machine.
