Update: Firefox and Trashed Connection

I tried installing Firefox a couple weeks ago, only to discover it somehow
trashed my Internet access. I'm connected via a Speedstream, and my
daughter runs her laptop from the same Speedstream using USB. After
installing Firefox, neither one of us had connectivity. The only way I
could get it back was to format and restore an image.

Well, I tried it again last night. Guess what? It happened again! I'm
usually pretty good at (and stubborn about) tracking down problems, but I
give up. I'm not looking for answers, just reporting back in, and if anyone
else here has a Speedstream, I'd be most interested in hearing about any
connection issues.

are you installing firefox vanilla or with extenions like that one that
speeds up the connection?

The only thing I can think of is a firewalll which didn't asked you in
a clear and understandable way if you want to allow a new program
access to the Internet. In stead it just blocked the program
(Firefox). In my opinion this is crappy software.

Anything Norton/Symantic, or ZoneAlarm?

Avast and Kerio 2.1.5. I can't understand how s/w can take down my
daughter's laptop also.

you are problably using ICS to send the internet to the laptop?

What happened with FF portable? did it solve the prob?

So that should not be the problem, Kerio is a nice firewall.

Did the laptop ever had Internet when the pc was not ON?

My computer is connected to the modem via CAT5. The laptop is using the USB
connection. Both connect very nicely. Both went down after installing
Firefox. Neither will connect until I reformat my PC (on or off doesn't
matter). This is just plain weird.

So far, FF portable is doing ok. I'm cautiously optomistic.

Thip, if portable FF fails you.. there is an even more hardcore solution..
to use a self contained version of FF that is ment to be run from a cd..
although you will not be running it off a cd...

in this last scenario there is NO way it can even touch your pc or
registry...

post another topic if you run into trouble and I will help you.

To your computer? Then you're using ICS, and if you lose your
connection the laptop loses its connection, since "its" connection is
your connection.
