When I click on "update" in the File menu, the updating
window indicates it could find no internet connection. I
have cable internet access which is always on. IE and
Outlook are working fine and I readily accessed this site
from within MS Antivirus. Also, ZoneAlarm Pro is set to
allow MS Antivirus Updater access to the internet. Any
idea what is wrong and what I could do about it.

Check under IE, File menu, if it is not set to work off-line.

check ur pc time (the clock on the bottem right hand
corner of the screen), make sure it sets correctly

Have you tested whether this function works if you disable Zone Alarm's
outbound functionality completely? Are you running the Windows firewall at
the same time as Zone Alarm?

Stopping ZoneAlarm completely did not solve the problem.
I just checked and confirmed Windows Firewall is off.

My problem is very similar. Just installed the program,
and when I click on "Update" the program automatically
takes me to the MSN9 sign in page, even though have an
always on DSL Connection. When I sign in MSN starts up,
but I also get the message that no internet connection
could be found.

I've seen one report where a user seemed to be reporting that having the
Windows firewall running simultaneously with a third-party firewall
apparently resulted in properly configured exceptions within that third
party firewall not working. I can believe this, but haven't tried to
replicate it.

My very distant past experience with third-party firewalls makes me distrust
the process of shutting them down.

On the other hand, I can also attest to seeing this error even without a
third-party firewall involved, so I can't clearly blame it on the firewall
for certain.

Had same problem after install of Counterspy.....
I then just reinstalled MS Antispyware and it then updated again......

The real Problem comes if you try to uninstall Counterspy, it then breaks
XPSP2 pretty good.

But there is a workaround fix for that too.

I have exactly the same problem in Win XP Pro. The
firewall is off, I can browse the web, FTP send/receive
and send/receive email but antispyware says it can't
detect an internet connection. I also have the same
problem with Sony's upgrade to their SonicStage software.
It alsocan't see the internet connection.
What's going on?

Antispyware internet connection problem starts after you installed
Counterspy I'll bet.

Now install MS Antispyware again and I think it will work again.

This worked for me !

Hey George,

I'm having the exact same problem. Did you figure out
what was wrong? Or is it just the problem with Beta
software?

That's an interesting symptom.

I think I would be inclined to run the Internet Connection wizard and tell
it that I connect to the Internet via a LAN. This assumes that you DSL
doesn't need you to run software on your machine to exchange credentials and
sign in at startup of the Internet connection.

FWIW, there's one other post today that states that scanning invokes a
dialup connection, and that this behavior started only in the last day or
two. I'm not sure what's going on.
