I'm also getting error 0X800b0003 after installing, removing,re-booting and
re-installling Defender. Update works fine in everything else. When I try
to update Defender I get the above error message and the text: 'The form
specified for the subject is not one supported or known by the specified
trust provider.' The program seems to scan O.K. and the install was
unremarkable. Any ideas?

Hi, Engel - unfortunately update works just fine. The OS is XP (home) with
SP 2. No other apparent problems. MS spyware worked well. The problem
started with defender. Thanx. Larry

Windows Update worked fine, but did not bring in signatures for Windows
Defender?

I've seen a handful of other messages with a similar error number and text
description. I don't have a fix or workaround to recommend, I'm afraid. It
does seem to me that some aspect of Windows Defender is not getting fully
registered --so that Windows Update is not aware that the signatures are
needed on the system, for example--but I don't have a clear idea of how to
fix it yet.

Hi, Bill - one more thing - Defender version is 1.1.1051.0, Engine Version is
1.1.1185.0 and Signature Version is 1.0.0.0 - these appear to be the usual
numbers. My question is: has anyone downloaded a newer version of the
signatures. Do they exist? Larry

Indeed there are newer signatures--at least two versions since then, and the
vast majority of users have received them. I'll revisit this thread later
when I get more time and see what else I can think of that might improve
things for you.

Thanx, Bill. One other thing I've tried is to clean up the registry. No
luck although there was lots of junk left lying around from MS Anti-Spyware.
(it did work well!) I look forward to your advice. Larry

This article involves a similar error number, but relates to Windows Update.

However, it may be worth trying the steps involved anyway, even though
Windows Update appears well and fine.

The other things I think of are update or repair installs--Start, control
panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender, and either:

update:
change, update

repair
"click here for support information", repair.

Bill - tried your suggestions and re-booted. No luck! Being paranoid, I
also temporarily disabled Norton Security (I've seen problems with it
before). Still no luck. Fortunately this is not a serious problem, only
interesting, as I still have As-Aware installed. Thanks again for your
thoughts. Larry

If you go to WindowsUpdate, are you offered updates for Microsoft
Antispyware, and do you get an error if you try to apply those?

Someone else posted that reinstalling over the existing install kicked
updates loose for him. I'm not sure he had the same error, but this may be
worth a try.

I also have the same error, have Installed, Un-installed, cleaned Reg. ran
windows update but only 2 files showed up for update no Defender files. The
old version worked fine and whish I could go back to it but I cannot find it
curently.

F Y I - I just downloaded the Defender installation file again in the hopes
that perhaps something had been repaired in it over the last week. After the
usual clean-up and re-installation, the usual error message! (see above)

Larry - Keith's error is one that several folks have stated is cleared up by
applying all critical security patches. Windows Installer 3.1 is among
those--and some have said that re-applying that update has resolved this.

I think that I'm seeing messages stating that your issue should be
resolvable by applying all critical security patches, including Windows
Installer 3.1--or perhaps re-applying that one.

Nope! Still the same old error messages and the update still offers the same
updates that I don't currently need. AU last installed four updates on Feb.
18.
