Through either automatic or manual updating I get the following error message:

"Error creating process <msiexec /q /p MPAS-FE.msp>. Reason: Access is
denied."

Is there eany way to get arround this?

Thank you.

In another group, a user found that something called "Process Guard" was
blocking this object. That finding, and turning it off, resolved a similar
error for him.

Searching all the antispyware groups, via the search button, on the key
mpas-fe, may yield additional info for you.

Thank you, Bill.

What is process guard? How do I turn it off? It seems that this application
is also blocking the Office updates, as I just found out.

How and when did this application got into my system?

Regards.

It isn't something I know about--I'm assuming it is a third-party security
or system maintenance product of some sort. It's possible that it is not
the only source of such an error.
(perhaps this is it: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/processguard/) I suspect
you would know if you had installed this, and I am quite certain this is not
something disreputable--installed by stealth.

What do you have installed in the way of security or antivirus products or
suites?

Thanks, Bill.

I have never installed Process Guard, so I think that might not be the
problem. I am running ZoneAlarm firewall and antivirus, also Spybot S&D for
over a year on this system and (lately) Windows Defender.

Indeed, since I have WD installed, that my updates do not work any more. I
realized that not only do WD updates not work, but also all automatic or even
manual Windows and Office updates give an error too.

I think I will try to uninstall Defender and look what happens. Do you agree?

Thanks again. Regards.

I suspect that simply uninstalling Windows Defender won't fix the problem,
but it is certainly an easy thing to try--so go ahead.

Another knowledgable user here has recommended this application:

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

for help with some similar issues.

I don't have any experience with it, but some others I know have looked at
it and had relatively minor critiques.

You might want to cautiously try it out.

Alternatively, if you attempt to go to WindowsUpdate, record what error
messages you get.

Additionally, look at the windowsupdate.log text file in \windows, and read
the entries related to that attempt, and record the error numbers involved.
(if the log is not in English, I won't be able to make much sense out of it,
but the error numbers should be the same.) And either research these
numbers yourself, via either support.microsoft.com or google or both--or
post them back here, and I can see what I can find on them.

You are not going to beleve this: I simply uninstalled WD, after reboot I
cleared every left registry inputs for that application (with ccleaner),
rebooted again and finally installed all pending updates (except the WD
update, of course). Now it worked fine!

Conclusion: Windows Defender lost several hours of my time, preventing
automatic and manual updates.

Thank you very much, Bill, and kind regards,

Rainer

Glad it worked out in the end, and glad you were able to spend the time
entertaining yourself in this way <g>
