Hi all,
I was using Antispy beta 1 wit no problems.
I uninstalled, and then installed Windows defender. (I know , I shouldn't
have uninstalled Antispy).
The install goes ok, but defender will not update. I have read and followed
solutions show in this forum but to no avail.
I get error:
"....Failed to update: 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation"

(No update shows in WindowsUpdate either)

Anyone have any ideas what this particular error is.

Hi Simon,
Give this a try...

1. Remove the current signature file. To do this, click Start, click Run,
type Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}, and then click OK.
2. Open Windows Defender. To do this, click Start, click Programs, and then
click Windows Defender.
3. Check for new definitions. To do this, click the Help options arrow next
to the Windows Defender Help icon, click About Windows Defender, and then
click Check for Updates.

Hope it helps!

Hi, I had exactly the same experience as Simon.

Edm, Trying to remove the current signature file didn't apper to work. It
complained of only being able to remove items that were installed!

Any more ideas?

PS: the software that disabled the old MS Spyware worked perfectly and iI am
now unable to reinstall that older version which was working OK.

What happens if you uninstall Windows Defender and reinstall build .701 of
Microsoft Antispyware? I don't know of any bar to doing this--but there are
lots of install issues with build .701 which I never had answers to.

Nope - didn't help. Same as AMK, when trying to remove definition file it
says can only remove installed components.
Can't reinstall antispy1 as I dont have the setup program anymore.
Does anyone know where I can download a "safe" copy (have read somewhere
that copies on P2P are very often tampered with).

May thanks for the help - anyone with any more ideas?

www.filehippo.com
Search on microsoft antspyware, and be sure to get build .701, not the
earlier expired ones.

I've uninstalled Windows Defender on Windows 2000 and reinstalled build .701
from that source without issues I can see.

Thank you Bill,

I have reinstalled Antispy beta 1 and it updated itself to build 701. It is
working correctly and updates ok.

I would like to try again to install Beta 2, but before I do, is there
anyway of finding out what error 0x80070643 means.

I've done a search at http://support.microsoft.com and not found much that
seems relevant. If you were trying to install Office, there's a file that,
if disabled, will generate this error.

If I were working this thread again, I might suggest using the Windows
Installer cleanup tool to remove the installer bits of Windows Defender
Signature updates. That should work even when you get the error message you
got when trying to remove definitions.

However, I'm not certain that this process--removing the in place
definitions--is relevant to fixing whatever is creating that error message.

I've had the same problem, with messages in my application eventlog going
something like:

Product: Windows Defender Signatures -- Error 1606.Could not access network
location \\koleskabet\MYRETUEN$\My Documents\

(I've remapped my "My documents" folder to my NAS-server. - but the path it
refers to doesn't exist)

I found that the solution was to go to "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender"
and run the "AS_Sigs.MSI".

Now it works perfectly.

I hope this can help someone :)

regards,

Christoffer Soltau

Thanks--that's interesting--and, I think, supportive of my idea that
removing the currently in place definitions may fix the issue--essentially
you replaced them with themselves--or at least that's my "vision" of what
the operation you did does.

Sorry for the long delay but I just got back to this problem this week.
Thanks for your previous help about reinstalling .701 of Antispyware
Bill. That was successful. Watching the threads I picked up on My Documents
re-direction as I had moved my docs to a different local partition. Sure
enough, following Christoffer Soltau's hint, I got Defender working OK.
Initially it didn't seen to have had any effect, but after a reboot and
presumably the software calling back to base it downloaded updates and is now
working OK (well for 24 hours anyhow!). Thanks all for your help.

Excellent. The update process has been changed significantly--just in the
last week or so. Thanks for reading!
