Guardian Angel needed for emergency help!

I downloaded the Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Express)
yesterday 17-11-'03 & I've noticed a marked slowing down
on most of my programs ... some can't even get started,
because the "Programs Not Responding" box appears.

I imagined that the SP1 download would make me super
efficient ... but, oh dear! ... all the problems I'm
having. It now takes about 5 mins to be operationable,
after I've logged-on. Feels like I'm stuck in some
thick treacle ..... Anybody out there who has got out of
this mess, please help!!

Kind Regards
Paul Mc

Paul,

Now download all of the critical updates post SP1 - you are still not
adequately protected.
Once you have done this - then defrag and if necessary use bootvis

This is not good advice. This has nothing to do with you
being adequately protected. Defragging will not help you.

XP service pack 1 kills computers.

Reload XP. back up your data to CD's (if it still runs)
and

format the hard drive.
reload XP.
DO NOT load SP1a.
Get a firewall, a virus checker and practice safe surfing.

or look at what you really use a computer for. If it is a
game box, go ahead and use windows. Good games use
windows. You can afford to lose time on a game box, and
besides, games load enough garbaget that you need to
occasionally wipe the computer clean and start over.
You're just out a couple hours of giggles.

If it is a box you use professionally, and are losing
billable time, get LINUX, load star office and Mozilla and
get back to work. Virus free, fast response.

Good luck.

ok, let's not get too riled up here. ;-)

Yes, SP1 did cause lots of users grief, but it was a very small percentage
of the whole - they were just very vocal about it! [as they should be].

Performing the rest of the updates is still good advice - I would try that
before resorting to a disk wipe and reinstall. One of the later updates
may "fix" your particular slowdown problem.

And before doing that I would make sure you don't have any virus or other
nasty on the machine - run a virus and SpyBot scan, or Ad-Aware. Also,
you might want to review just what services are running and what network
protocols you've got installed. Many people do not need half the stuff
that's turned on by default. google for "xp services configuration" and
do some research; black viper's site is generally recommended. If you
are not network connected and only use a dial-up modem, remove the "MS
Network" and "File and Printer Sharing" network layers, leaving just
tcp/ip [unless you're on AOL - oooh, that's nasty, leave it alone]. Take
good notes on what you turn off - so you can turn it on again if things go
awry.

If all that fails and the machine is still a snail, then I'd say yes,
you've been bitten by the SP1 "problem". Sorry. A totally clean install
followed immeaditely by SP1 _SHOULD_ work for you. Really, if you can you
should try to get SP1 installed, it does fix up lots of stuff and is worth
having. [download the SP1 "administrator" or "full" installer, so you
have it on-hand, and don't have to connect to run it. Also get the
recently released "roll up" package (again, the "full" download), and
install it right after SP1. ALWAYS REBOOT BETWEEN UPDATES!!! TWICE, JUST
TO BE SURE!!. [[both these packages are avail on the MS site, SP1A and
the october xp roll-up - get the "full" versions, burn 'em to CD and
keep with your XP Setup CD. If you ever need to reinstall you'll have
everything in hand]]

Final Advice: do NOT install any of WinUpdate's "recommended" updates,
just the "critical" ones [the top section]. Carefully review the
recommended ones and only get them if you are SURE you NEED them. Same
goes for the drivers section - go to the specific vendor's site for a
driver update rather than take one from the WinUpdate site. And never
update your video driver just because there's a new version - if it ain't
broke don't fix it!

Good Luck!

I'm sorry but I have to disagree.
Your advice of not installing SP1(a) and the remains critical updates is
just clearly showing a blatant disregard for the stability and security of
the PC - regardless of the additional measures such as firewalls and anti
virus software.

There is no excuse for posting such misleading and frankly irresponsible
advice.
