ok, let's not get too riled up here. ;-)
Yes, SP1 did cause lots of users grief, but it was a very small percentage
of the whole - they were just very vocal about it! [as they should be].
Performing the rest of the updates is still good advice - I would try that
before resorting to a disk wipe and reinstall. One of the later updates
may "fix" your particular slowdown problem.
And before doing that I would make sure you don't have any virus or other
nasty on the machine - run a virus and SpyBot scan, or Ad-Aware. Also,
you might want to review just what services are running and what network
protocols you've got installed. Many people do not need half the stuff
that's turned on by default. google for "xp services configuration" and
do some research; black viper's site is generally recommended. If you
are not network connected and only use a dial-up modem, remove the "MS
Network" and "File and Printer Sharing" network layers, leaving just
tcp/ip [unless you're on AOL - oooh, that's nasty, leave it alone]. Take
good notes on what you turn off - so you can turn it on again if things go
awry.
If all that fails and the machine is still a snail, then I'd say yes,
you've been bitten by the SP1 "problem". Sorry. A totally clean install
followed immeaditely by SP1 _SHOULD_ work for you. Really, if you can you
should try to get SP1 installed, it does fix up lots of stuff and is worth
having. [download the SP1 "administrator" or "full" installer, so you
have it on-hand, and don't have to connect to run it. Also get the
recently released "roll up" package (again, the "full" download), and
install it right after SP1. ALWAYS REBOOT BETWEEN UPDATES!!! TWICE, JUST
TO BE SURE!!. [[both these packages are avail on the MS site, SP1A and
the october xp roll-up - get the "full" versions, burn 'em to CD and
keep with your XP Setup CD. If you ever need to reinstall you'll have
everything in hand]]
Final Advice: do NOT install any of WinUpdate's "recommended" updates,
just the "critical" ones [the top section]. Carefully review the
recommended ones and only get them if you are SURE you NEED them. Same
goes for the drivers section - go to the specific vendor's site for a
driver update rather than take one from the WinUpdate site. And never
update your video driver just because there's a new version - if it ain't
broke don't fix it!
Good Luck!
