I put this on some desktops and laptops at work. Used the one I downloaded
for the laptop I am on. It is version .615 and works when not at work.
Last
week I went to MS site and downloaded from there. Whatever version was in
the downloads section is the one I loaded and it did not update on my
desktop
at work. It pretends it checks for updates and says it is current but it
is
not. I the download site still has other beta versions I guess I could
have
downloaded an old one, it is already uninstalled.
There are continuing reports of folks getting build .615 when they should be
getting .701. However, I don't know of any changes to the update mechanism
between the two builds.
I will try to install version .701 at work and see what happens.
Consider setting the proxy setting in Internet connections to "always
detect." This may make a difference in whether it works at work, and
whether it is able to switch between work and home.
The other issue
1. Version 6.15
2. XP Pro SP2 OS
3. Normally signed on as "user" NO Admin privileges(MS Best Practice)
4. Indicates it was updating signature but when I checked today it had not
updated since November 15, 2005
5. Manually ran update from GUI with "user" privileges and it updated
properly.
Sign on as administrator. You are absolutely correct about what Microsoft
considers a Best Practice, but this beta is largely the product of a third
party developer--it was released only a few weeks after Microsoft acquired
the company. You can run normally as a limited user, but you will probably
see some unexpected messages, and I wouldn't expect signature updates to
work.
I do have an office that runs in this mode, with Microsoft Antispyware
installed. I haven't been onsite there in over a year--and when I do
connect to their machines it is as administrator--I'll have to go check on
how they are doing. They do run as administrator once a month to get the
critical updates installed.
I am hoping MS is going to come up with Enterprise Anti-virus/Anti-Spyware
next year. I work for a non-profit with limited budget, I have been
trying
to use the MS system on laptops and a few desktops. So the issue of the
software not updating was on a number of different machines all installed
using the exe for .615
I do too. What sort of a firewall is involved? The Enterprise product you
are interested in is called Microsoft Client Protection:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/solutions/security/clientprotection/default.mspx
It is in the early stages of beta, and I've no idea whether my clients will
be able to afford it--I'm somewhat pessimistic. However, I believe that the
underlying technology, if not the management console and reporting
framework, will be available in Windows OneCare Live--in public beta at:
http://windowsonecare.com
I don't know how this one will be priced, either, but I'm hoping it will be
quite affordable. Both, I believe, will be subscription based products.
Do I need to clean out folders, files, or registry from old uninstallation
of the program?
In situations where it appears that the original installation is
corrupted--i.e. user chosen settings don't stick, for example, I've often
recommended deleting \program files\microsoft antispyware and all the
subfolders. However, under normal circumstances, there's no need. I've not
bothered ever with the registry entries, or the handful of files in the
system32 folder (well, there was a bug.....)--I wouldn't worry about
cleaning up too throughly.
