Update Catch up

S

Steve W

Hi,

I've searched the newsgroup to no avail, but I'm sure this question has been
asked before. So here goes...

My brother has a cleanly installed W2k SP3 PC. He connects to the Internet
via a modem. He went to Windows Update and discovered 38 MB of updates
waiting. Some of those are just installer files that lead to another 20MB or
so of download.
How can I help him to catch up on his updates (I have broadband :))?
Where can I download updates for W2k (I'm running XP) that I can burn to CD
for him?

Thanks in advance for your help

This may seem like an inelegant solution but it'll work. Have your brother
hit Windows Update and let it search for missing security updates. When its
done he can see the list of available updates in the results pane most of
which will have a KB # associated with them. Have him jot down the KB
article numbers and send them to you. You can use this site -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];kbjump - to key in
the article numbers and save the files to disk for burning. You could Google
for all available critical patches since SP3 but the above method could be
just as quick.

Some advise from experience:

Get a full copy of SP4 and install it first:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...f1-749f-49f4-8010-297bd6ca33a0&DisplayLang=en
[copy/paste URL if it wraps]

Then install IE6 SP1 Get it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en

Look-up the KB article numbers from the link above and install those.

After you have the bulk of the patches installed, your brother should be
able to return and get the last few updates that are needed after some of
the others go in.

I just built a Win2K system for a customer and it took several return trips
to WU to get all the critical stuff.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve downloaded W2k SP4, but the IE6 link goes to an
installer file download. Is there anywhere to download the whole thing?

Thanks
