Asus has a bios update for the 3.0ghz cpu. I plan to upgrade from a 1.8ghz
to a 3.0ghz. Should I update the bios before putting in the new chip or
after?

I would think updating the bios immediately before the chip is replaced
would be okay.

Before

Definitely before.

The new bios will likely have microcode updates that will help or are needed
for successful operation of the new CPU.

Please stick with the original post, as it is essentially in connection with
your original question..

It is a different subject for a different computer, and I am finished with
the other thread. I am finished with this one too.

Thank you all who replied.

A word of caution:

If your CPU is 1.8 GHz, it's possible that the mainboard will not support a
3.00 GHz CPU. The usual P4s operating at that frequency use an 800 MHz FSB
(front side bus), which is unlikely to be available from an old mainboard,
BIOS update or no.

There was a *3.06* GHz CPU with a 533 MHz FSB. It had the distinction of
being the only 533 MHz chip that supported hyperthreading (if memory
serves).

If your mainboard is from Asus, have a look at
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us . Check
the CPUs supported by your mainboard. It will also tell you what BIOS
version is required for the supported CPUs.

If you wish to use a supported CPU, and the BIOS version is too old to
support it, update the BIOS before you swap in the new processor.

Good luck.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

You indicate the purpose of the bios upgrade is to support the 3.0 GHz cpu.
If not in place, how will the bios recognize such a cpu?
