I HAVE AN "HP PAVILLION" 6540c, AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF
ANYONE HAS HAD SUCCESS GOING FROM 98 TO XP. WHEN I TRY TO
FIND MORE INFO. FROM HP, THE LINK I CLICK ON CHANGES FROM
ENGLISH TO GERMAN. HAVE MADE SURE THAT I'VE CHECKED THE
ENGLISH/USA BOX, AND IT STAYS ENGLISH UNTIL I TRY TO
ACCESS WEB-SITE WITH MORE INFO. ON UP-GRADING. SO, HERE I
AM ASKING IF ANYONE CAN ASSIST ME WITH THIS DECISION. I'VE
ALREADY ACQUIRED WIN XP DISK. IT DOES WARN ME THAT MY PC
MAY NOT BE ABLE TO DISPLAY OR FUNCTION PROPERLY IF CHANGED
TO WIN XP. BUT, IS THIS JUST SO A PERSON WILL KEEP WHAT
THEY HAVE, OR GO OUT AND PURCHASE A NEW PC WITH WIN XP?

Please don't post with all caps. It's very hard on the eyes and in
newsgroups is considered as shouting and very rude.

The XP disc contains an upgrade advisor. Run it and it'll tell you what
problems you may have. It doesn't lie just to make you but a new PC...
(Although I'm sure some people are going to debunk that comment!!). Try
going to HPs support site and see if they have any XP device drivers for
your model. If they do, download them and burn them to CD (assuming you
have a CD burner). Then backup everything you can't afford to lose and
install XP as an upgrade.

If this doesn't work, try installing it as a clean copy and see if that
helps....

I agree with the previous reply: efinitely run the
Upgrade advisor, before you commit to upgrade. Have a
plan to handle all possible hardware and software issues
that it identifies. Common issues include anti-virus
software and CD writing software. Uninstall all that
befoer the upgrade, then reinstall the correct verison
plus patches (if required). For example, XP requires Easy
Cd Creator 5+patches, or higher. Version 4 will not
work. Norton requires version 2002 or higher. Etc.

I successfully upgraded to XP on a Gateway that orignially
came with 98 (first edition). I had no real problems. I
did have to buy some new software, including anti-virus,
CD-writing, and DVD player. I did not have to provide XP
with any drivers for things inside the case. It had
excllent default drivers. I did lose some printer
functions, like double-soded, but I never used those
options. I had to download and install new scanner
sopftware (from HP in my case). However, the drivers that
I had under 98 worked fine.

But, others have been less lucky (or less prepared), so
please backup all important files before doing the upgrade.

By the way, XP likes RAM and disk space. If you doe not
have at least 128 Meg of RAM and 3 Gig of disk (free), do
not attempt the upgrade. If you can install more RAM or a
larger disk, do that under 98, as it may be easier than
under XP.
