I have a new laptop with XP. Do you recommend downloading WinZip ( which
I've been using since '96) or is there somethng better
that works with XP?
Thanks,
Frank

If you are the NTFS file system, you can determine this by right clicking a
drive in Explorer and selecting properties, it will tell whether or not you
are using NTFS under file system, XP has the ability to compress any file or
folder. For information about this, open Help and Support, type zip in the
search box and press enter, the first item in the list should explain it.

As to what's best or better, you do realize this is a loaded question.
Everyone will have their favorite. I'm only pointing out if you are using
NTFS, XP has a built in compression capability.

The "Compressed Folders" that is included in XP is a very basic
zipping/unzipping tool. For many it it is enough and, for them, Winzip is
overkill. On the other hand, if you prefer the Winzip interface or use many
of its extra features, you will want to continue using it.

Suggestion: Try working with the built in tool. It's easily accessible via
the right click menu. If you find it lacking for your needs, install
Winzip.

The new beta version of WinZip (9.0) has a new feature. You can encrypted
files! As was mentioned, XP's zipping function is very basic. If you are in
to theme creation, WinZip is better, as it has the Install feature.
