Unwittingly activate hidden tags?

OL2K2

I'm aware of a program that inserts some hidden tag in each email that you
send out, which is triggered when the recipient opens the message. Then I
receive a return receipt. The recipient does NOT have to do anything; and
indeed doesn't even know that a receipt's been sent.

I've sent myself such an email, and have looked for evidence of the "tag"
but can't find anything. (I've been told that it's some kind of "HTML
tag.") Is there any way to configure my OL2K2 to that I don't unknowingly
trigger tags included in emails that I receive.

A possibly related question: I get spams that have seeminly blank message
bodies. Am I "triggiering" something when I open them that signifies to the
sender that my email is a "live" one? If so, anyway to avoid that?

Many thanks.

Thanks....

It seems the KB article 307594 addresses this...

Outlook 2003 deals with these "web bugs", but in Outlook 2002 your only
option to avoid them is to read mail in plain-text only. There's a registry
key to set to do that, but I don't know it right off. You might search
http://www.slipstick.com or
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto for information on that.
